Day to Day 02:53
I'm doing a new dance Called the day to day Ain't thinking about tomorrow Quit fretting on yesterday And I'm feeling alright Doing the day to day I was just a young fool Thinking I could look passed the moment Pre-acting anticipating cause I wasted time trying to read all their minds Instead of asking and embracing surprise I couldn't fit the whole world in my head There's not enough cause for all the consequences Of all the could that could come to pass Just one will, so I'm Doing a new dance... It got so bad I was wishing that I had Things I had that I had forgot Was too busy counting days 'til I had it made 'Till it killed me I was missing my life

Little girl climbing up my leg She wants to play my old guitar I know it won’t be long Jack the dog needs a walk Jack the drink is slowly surely wearing off In the morning singing songs Soft enough not to raise alarm In the morning singing songs The day seems long So I take a little time to myself To brush up on an old tune So that later on I can give All of myself to you And sometimes I’ll sing a line That sends shivers up my spine If it does the same for somebody else Well, hey… that’s alright In the morning… So it’s on with our days we go And most folks’ll never know About the show that I put on Before the dawn … life seems long
3.
High along that mountain trail I sold my soul to the Devil there In a deal for a little more time cuz I am sure that God doesn’t mind Cuz we’re trying hard just to figure out our days Trying hard to sing your praise Trying hard to figure out our souls When all we seem to do is grow old ‘Take a breath’ I tell myself when its tough as nails or hard as hell Cools me down and lets me know that all is fine again again let’s go on
4.
Blooms are baffling me again and it seems so long since way back when She picked some honeysuckle on our summer stroll And wouldn't take another step until I took a taste of what reminded her of visiting Texas Just a drop upon her tongue and she could hear Her mother's father's laugh So I closed my eyes and took a sip and she said "Babe, can you hear him?" I apologized sincerely that "I can't" She wanted so badly to share with me her memories She wanted so badly for me to know Why she would need a moment 'cuz I'd need a moment too When something got us thinking 'bout that great man But life is busier these days The needs are curds the wants are whey And we've yet to cross off visiting Texas But I don't like to dwell, in fact we're building memories from scratch And honey well I'm damn proud of that 'Cuz I ain't fool enough to ask a genie for another wish Or look too long at Texas on a list

Brainchild 02:56
In the midnight hour and the waning dusk among the collection of elephant tusks We incubate our thoughts by sitting on them As I sink into the velvet cushions Reminds me to breath when I’m busy pushing And I’ll keep on pushing till you pull it off Kick my feet upon the ottoman Its two long winks until I dream again And I’ll keep on dreaming till you pull it off So shake me like a tambourine Remind me of my memories And wincing I will rise from sleep The way you smile brings me back So flip the lights and we’ll take a crack Cuz the worst don’t stand a chance To the best that can happen Ideas are hatching to the world Some are new but most are old The trick is to sift yourself thought them And shake off the shit you’re covered in So shake my like a tambourine Remind me of my memories And smiling I will rise from sleep The way you smile brings me back so flip the lights and we'll take a crack Cuz the worst don't stand a chance, So can I please have this dance? Cuz the worst don't stand a chance to the best that can happen Cuz the worst don't stand a chance, So can I please take your hand? Cuz the worst don't stand a chance to the best that can happen

Bohemian 03:07
Times aint changing the rules ain’t breaking Only the strong survive and strength is measured by the dollar sign I got an itch to get in politics to change it from the inside out But all the hands I’m shaking, money I’m taking could change the man who wants to change the world But a law school drop-out bohemian lives a righteous life but only one so I’m leaving him Unless his ink can flood the whole world unless we think about a new world honey I gotta keep composing You gotta know you’re chosen To right history your pen is permanent and your will is free follow me To a new era don’t be scared of thinking in a new way start today You got a mind of your own you gotta take control or you’re just another in the machine That is bringing us down Now my mind is shaking I can’t go insane I’ve got to play the game
7.
Lonely Eve 02:46
Inside the phone-booth, outside the station My hands are freezing and won’t make the call No soul in the world knows I’m at this number Sometimes I hope I’ve been forgotten All the merry songs and wishes are making me mad that I miss your kisses But I don’t ask to turn the radio down See the junk that’s in my veins is a way to change the same old pain I can buy a smile til tomorrow I can see you now, laying down your head I’m begging Don’t lose no more sleep on me And the east coast sun will rise but I’m still hypnotized Before I limp into tomorrow And if I see Ol’ Saint Nick I'll ask for one more hit How about a little Christmas tree? I can see now laying down your head I’m begging Don’t waste no more love on me
8.
Wondering where it’s from my glance is at the sky Answers we found before are slipping through my mind From all the hints I’ve got I turn from what it’s not To face the great unknown knowing it’s all I got After my thinking’s done I find a clearer mind Looking outside in and minding what I find From all the hints I’ve got I turn from what I’m not To face the great unknown knowing it’s all I got

The Wait 04:12
I whispered your name For fear of jinxing you would come As if I had that kind of sway A love so deep Yet ever unrequited With nothing to blame but the way it is I couldn’t wait to greet ya I couldn’t wait to find out how you are I couldn’t wait to meet ya But the wait is all I ever got Through her tears She said the weight’s too heavy To have yet another soul to bear I said “My dear, you can let me help you Carry this one Cuz I’ll always be here” I couldn’t wait… And the ceiling falls down Until I’m pressed against the floor It’s hard to believe I’ll ever be anything other than crushed But I know I must Find a way to try to love this And forgive myself for eventually feeling alright Yes I have paid my debt in sorrow I’m coming back to life A love so deep…
10.
I’m gonna raise the flag of our good ol’ union And bring it in the nights I can As the sun goes down on the horizon I vow to be a better man I’m gonna tape a quarter to the bottom corner Across them stars of white on blue So when the wind whips the flag’ll billow But it won’t get stuck and ripping on the roof It’s my little secret that I wish I could reveal But it’s coming in one and going out the other ear It’s my little secret that I wish you’d understand I vow to be a better man Gonna plant a seed and watch it good And give thanks in awe if I get food Got a little secret that it all tastes better Putting pride in the things you do Gonna tinker with my busted stereo Find what ain’t looking like it should Swap in a piece and lay between the speakers Mmm… that vinyl sounds so good Gonna save a dog / Gonna raise a baby Gonna tell my wife what’s on my mind Even if it gets me in a little bit ‘a trouble A little now’s better than a lot down the line
11.
New Umbrella 03:00
So it comes to this and that and everything in between that I’m thinking That I’m stronger to resist the temptress but I’d just as soon avoid the tempting As it happens here’s your turf so I’ve no right to try to talk you into leaving But you’ve got me in a bind and my will’s running outa time the clock is ticking Through the chatter of the room somehow one voice seems to rise above the clamor I know I’ve heard that laugh before but in a way this time sounds strange I think she’s faking Though I try to keep my eyes fixed on the politicking gentlemen I falter And sure enough she’s there and I do my damnedest not to stare but I can’t help it What’s a Mississippi man do with a missy with a plan to clip his wings She’ll Let him go and he’ll come on back cuz he’s attached and she’s pulling all them strings She kept in touch without a word by being nothing but herself for no one else Hence her being so polite for all the folks who see the world in black and white Well she’s not the only one but she’s one of a kind and they’re few and far between See I haven’t settled down cuz the one in my arms is the woman of my dreams So please don’t donate too much charity to the happy hobo living wild and free Cuz then he’ll haveta do your thing and find some rain to try his shiny new umbrella Oh but When the storms come all I’ll need is a fire to dry my tired feet So I won’t follow salt thrown over shoulders into memories See I Don’t believe in luck but I’d be happy to take some if its just laying around For a minor commotion or a sly diversion so I could bid adieu without ever having to talk to you
12.
I’m begging you not to burn me Cuz I’ve been burned before I know I’m playing with fire Cuz I’m so tired of being cold So hold me close so I can drop these blues Its even getting hard now to sleep sound knowing you’re not here safe in my arms And dreaming of you… well it only makes waking so hard I didn’t think it would last forever I just hoped it would last for a while So keep holding on
13.
Divin' In 03:25
Let's get adventurous And we could tangle up The fibers of experience Will shape themselves to us And leave a trace of what otherwise would never be Like diving into water You'll forever change the sea And it'll be dangerously sweet You could get swept right off your feet But falling ain't flying my friend So beware where you're diving in You gotta believe in yourself Enough to be you So you can let someone else Believe in you too And we'll never have to wonder What we got ourselves in This mess ain't second best so Let it be what it is

about

Baker's Dozen is a re-mastered compilation of Anderson's favorite home-studio recordings from his three independent albums plus a little something extra (his new song "Diving In").

Despite coming from multiple projects spanning several years, Baker's Dozen showcases Anderson's cerebral songwriting and soulful style with smooth continuity. It serves as a great recap on the early years of his young (but old-soul'd) songwriting career, and will leave old and new fans alike enticed for what's yet to come.
