Little Secret
03:30
|
|||
I’m gonna raise the flag of our good ol’ union
And bring it in the nights I can
As the sun goes down on the horizon
I vow to be a better man
I’m gonna tape a quarter to the bottom corner
Across them stars of white on blue
So when the wind whips the flag’ll billow
But it won’t get stuck and ripping on the roof
It’s my little secret that I wish I could reveal
But it’s coming in one and going out the other ear
It’s my little secret that I wish you’d understand
I vow to be a better man
Gonna plant a seed and watch it good
And give thanks in awe if I get food
Got a little secret that it all tastes better
Putting pride in the things you do
Gonna tinker with my busted stereo
Find what ain’t looking like it should
Swap in a piece and lay between the speakers
Mmm… that vinyl sounds so good
Gonna save a dog / Gonna raise a baby
Gonna tell my wife what’s on my mind
Even if it gets me in a little bit ‘a trouble
A little now’s better than a lot down the line

More of Less
04:23
|
|||
She found a forest of philosophy
It gives her clarity
She’s got well-spoken dead folks’ shoulders to stand on
She can cite the great minds aligned with what it takes
To keep her certain of her claims
For a good night’s sleep
For a good morning wake
But I’ve been out in the wood alone
Searching for a grassy knoll
Or a flower for home
Or a stream to find the flow
But I’ve had no such luck
No I just trudge through decomposing muck
And get stuck by the brambles and the burrs
But I pick myself up and I dust myself off
A little worse for the wear But a little less scared
What do I forget
That keeps me coming back
For more of less?
What ain’t I trying to get
That keeps me coming back
For more of less ?
It’s like a belt tightening around your chest
Or falling into emptiness
Thank God I’ve been wrong about my last breath
She found a forest of philosophy
And brings me twigs and leaves
For when I’m in the mood to read

Miners' Lament
04:26
|
|||
Oh! Cruel Fate, that near-by earth would quake
And barricade us in her grasp
No escape out the way we came
It’s amazing how much dirt can weigh
Careless men, panic at the thought
That Judgment is determined by the deed
Some pretend they weren’t quite so cruel, that they
Administered a cure and not disease
The sobs and the cries of the doomed and damned in time
We’ll have sobs and cries from the doomed and damned in time
If we can’t reach them
If we can’t reach them in time
Critics will claim – it was ‘cuz our greed
We were warned not to dig too deep
Truth be told - the reason that I did was
I’ve got mouths to feed
So I’ll do as I’m told - sure as thorns on a rose
Protect the fragile beauty with a beast
So jewels of alabaster amidst this grand disaster
Offer such little relief
Oh! Cruel Fate, that near-by earth would quake
And barricade us in her grasp
Pacts were made to see another day
We would mend our mindless wanton ways

The Wait
04:11
|
|||
I whispered your name
For fear of jinxing you would come
As if I had that kind of sway
A love so deep
Yet ever unrequited
With nothing to blame but the way it is
I couldn’t wait to greet ya
I couldn’t wait to find out how you are
I couldn’t wait to meet ya
But the wait is all I ever got
Through her tears
She said the weight’s too heavy
To have yet another soul to bear
I said “My dear, you can let me help you
Carry this one
Cuz I’ll always be here”
I couldn’t wait…
And the ceiling falls down
Until I’m pressed against the floor
It’s hard to believe I’ll ever be anything other than crushed
But I know I must
Find a way to try to love this
And forgive myself for eventually feeling alright
Yes I have paid my debt in sorrow
I’m coming back to life
A love so deep…

Texas Honeysuckle
03:24
|
|||
Blooms are baffling me again
and it seems so long since way back when
She picked some honeysuckle on our summer stroll
And wouldn't take another step until I took a taste
of what reminded her of visiting Texas
Just a drop upon her tongue and she could hear
Her mother's father's laugh
So I closed my eyes and took a sip and she said "Babe, can you hear him?"
I apologized sincerely that "I can't"
She wanted so badly to share with me her memories
She wanted so badly for me to know
Why she would need a moment 'cuz I'd need a moment too
When something got us thinking 'bout that great man
But life is busier these days
The needs are curds the wants are whey
And we've yet to cross off visiting Texas
But I don't like to dwell, in fact we're building memories from scratch
And honey well I'm damn proud of that
'Cuz I ain't fool enough to ask a genie for another wish
Or look too long at Texas on a list

Coffee Cup
02:57
|
|||
Its sweet like the sugar
Cutting the bitter of the
Sludge in my mug
That I’ve grown to love
Cuz It gets my morning moving so
Nights are free for groovin’
Rocking some tubes n’ letting loose
All the nooses that bind us
also remind us that they’re
Tightening quick so we
Gotta take a little time to
Notice a moment and know
No-one can own it
Cuz it’s something that’s shared
It’s something in between a dream
So won’t you shine my pretty little coffee cup ?
Won’t you shine my pretty little mug ?

Marjorie Jane
03:08
|
|||
What will you think about Marjorie Jane
when you’re in the hands of the properly trained?
We feuded about what to do and cried when we knew
there’d never be any convincing you
Your new home is a sanctuary
Your new home is where our hearts will be
Though it’s back to our lives with our bodies and minds
We’ll visit you soon but you won’t recognize
What will you think about Marjorie Jane
When your son is a stranger who’s locked you away ?
Your new home is the best we can afford
Your new home is for your own good
Which you can’t decipher through the dusk of your days
But behind every smile there’s a hint of a glimpse
Of a time it was clear but it’s now out of reach
And the woman we love slips farther from us
Your new home is a sanctuary
Your new home is where our hearts will always be
What will you think about Marjorie Jane?
Will sunshine surprise you after the rain?
I pray you dream up a family you trust with your life
and tell me about them sometime

Complete
03:21
|
|||
I’m of no use when incomplete
like a saw missing teeth
but with my people and their love
I will conquer and rise above
Above the shallows
The gift to fly
Bygones let be
Bygones let by
Like forgiveness from the ordained
I’ve got the chance to reclaim
My perfect self
Free of the stain
But not the lesson of the sin
Them silver linings of toil and woe
No wiser friends you’ll ever know
But in those moments rare inspired and full
try to remember what keeps you whole

Morning Singing
05:40
|
|||
Little girl climbing up my leg
She wants to play my old guitar
I know it won’t be long
Jack the dog needs a walk
Jack the drink is slowly surely wearing off
In the morning singing songs
Soft enough not to raise alarm
In the morning singing songs
The day seems long
So I take a little time to myself
To brush up on an old tune
So that later on I can give
All of myself to you
And sometimes I’ll sing a line
That sends shivers up my spine
If it does the same for somebody else
Well, hey… that’s alright
In the morning…
So it’s on with our days we go
And most folks’ll never know
About the show that I put on
Before the dawn
… life seems long
